On behalf of the Union internationale des chemins de fer (UIC), BSL Transportation Consultants carried out once more the biennial European survey on combined rail/ road transport for the “2018 Report on Combined Transport”.

The 2018 Report provides readily usable information on the European combined rail/ road transport market, and is a report unique of its kind, a comprehensive instrument necessary for understanding the sector in terms of market structure and volumes.

In addition to the market information featured in previous editions (i.e. market structure and
general outlook), the 2018 edition of the Report includes some of the significant topics currently
under discussion in the environment of European Combined Transport and Intermodal Transport, such as

  • an overview of the current CT wagon fleet for the year 2017 (since no recent data was available) regarding the types of wagons used for combined transport, their quantities and average age of the fleet as well as the expected market development was analysed and shown in this Report.
  • As an important segment of the European CT market, maritime or hinterland CT is closely related to the dynamics of seaborne container handling at European seaports, which was analysed for more than 50 ports in Europe. Of course, one focus for this report is on the rail hinterland transportation.
  • This report provides an overview of existing national plans to help combined transport in Europe.

The Report also shows the expected market development in Combined Transport, based on the market participants’ assessment. The outlook for 2018 and upcoming years remains very positive with an average annual growth rate between 3 and 5.5 per cent.
